1.
Do I have to be a law student to volunteer at CLASSIC?
In order to work on case files with a supervising lawyer (ie. WAC), you need to be a law student or graduate (have taken or is taking law courses). We have also had students who are studying political studies, social work, and sociology volunteering at CLASSIC in other programs. They typically volunteer with the Systemic Initiatives Project or provide assistance to other programs in various ways (ex. connecting students/clients to community services).  If you are not a law student, please contact us at info@classiclaw.ca to see how you can get involved.
2.
How do I volunteer with CLASSIC?
During the school year, you do not apply directly to CLASSIC to volunteer. Instead, you must apply through Pro Bono Students Canada (PBSC) at the University of Saskatchewan. The applications are typically due in mid-September. Watch out for PBSC information sessions at the beginning of the year. They also post the project list up on their website (http://law.usask.ca/probono/Projects.php) or near their office in the College of Law.  Here, you can read about each of CLASSIC's programs and how you can get involved.

For volunteering during the summer, please contact CLASSIC directly (you do not need to apply through PBSC). You are free to attend our orientation at the beginning of the summer.
3.
What program(s) can I volunteer for?
You can volunteer with any of CLASSIC's three major programs: the Walk-in-Advocacy Clinic (WAC), the Legal Advice Clinic (LAC), or the Systemic Initiatives Project (SIP).  For more information on those programs, please go to the WHAT WE DO page.
4.
I did not get accepted to volunteer at CLASSIC or into the particular program I applied for. Can I volunteer with CLASSIC outside of PBSC?
Unfortunately, due to resources and how we like to work with PBSC during the year, CLASSIC cannot take on more volunteers than the spots we have available through PBSC. Please try  again next year, take the intensive course during the year, or volunteer during the summer.
5.
How many volunteer hours am I required to complete?
Programs typically require at least 3 - 4 hours a week. You  must complete WAC hours within the normal work day (9 to 5 PM), but you can divide your hours as needed throughout the week. For LAC, you must attend your scheduled shifts (which may be afternoon or evenings on Tuesday or Thursday) at CLASSIC. SIP may vary; you may attend community meetings or your project may allow for you to work on it primarily outside of CLASSIC on your own.

6.
Are there other ways I can get involved with CLASSIC besides volunteering during the school year?
Yes. You can also take the CLASSIC Intensive Seminar in your second or third year. This is a registered course at the College and you will receive  15 credits (one term's worth) for being at CLASSIC. You will not be taking any other courses during the intensive and will be at CLASSIC from Monday to Thursday, from 9 AM - 5 PM, and then your seminar on Friday.

You can also apply to work as a summer case student at CLASSIC. Typically notifications about job opportunities at CLASSIC will begin earlier than most, so please watch out for career e-mails or posting around the College early in your second term.
7.
Am I required to volunteer during exam periods and reading weeks?
We understand that students are really busy people and do not want to overwhelm you. We do our best to accommodate your schedules, and do not typically require you to volunteer during those periods .
